2014 Mercedes-Benz S Class Review: Opulence and Innovation

It is a considerable task to determine what may be the “best” in a given industry. What qualities, characteristics, and features afford us the insight to render such judgment? We are not sure about who can sing or dance better than the rest, but the reviews are in for the Mercedes-Benz S Class. Let us say that if you seek the perfect coupling of opulence and innovation, you’ll want to keep reading.

The Exterior

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S Class offers an elegant tapering that creates a slender appearance without sacrificing the sumptuous curves for which Mercedes-Benz is recognized. An aggressive front end hints at the power beneath the hood and is accentuated by a lustrous grille closely held by two gently curved headlights. The taillights parallel the aggressive structure, grasping the curvature and bringing the tapering to a tasteful conclusion.

The Interior

With such lavish features and plush seating, the S Class conjures the same incomprehensive stammering as when you asked your crush to the prom. Leather seating, with optional diamond-patterned perforations, host enticing features like heating and cooling or hot stone massage; in fact, the rear seats can recline by 43-degrees with plotted airbags that prevent passengers from slipping beneath the safety belts. Other options include LCD screens, airplane-style tray tables, remote control access to the infotainment system, and many more that give this model executive status.

LED lights highlight the controls on the dash and secretly line the cabin for a soft hue – all of which can be color-customized. Cup holders that maintain the heat or coolness of your drink and an unrivaled sound system only add to the experience you’ll enjoy as the owner of a Mercedes-Benz S Class model.

The Drive

The S Class’s 455-hp, 516 lb-ft twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 manages a powerful yet silky smooth acceleration, traveling 0-60 MPH in 4.8 seconds. It provides enough strength without making a driver feel overwhelmed. In the cabin, few roadway impediments are felt since the air suspension keeps the drive balanced and beautiful. Standard in the S Class is the MAGIC BODY CONTROL® System that identifies roadway deviations and obstacles and accordingly adjusts the suspension to optimize control and impact. It’s more of a revelation than a drive.

Is it any wonder that Mercedes-Benz is 2013’s best-selling luxury brand in the United States? We didn’t think so either.
